The lecture provides an introduction to the field of database systems from a user’s perspective, as well as an overview of selected topics in the implementation of database systems. The focus is on the theoretical aspects of relational database design based on the relational data model, relational algebra, and relational calculus. Furthermore, formalisms, theory, and algorithms of relational design theory are presented. A detailed treatment of the query language SQL, which is implemented in most relational database systems, is included. In the section on database implementation techniques, the physical data organization, query processing, as well as aspects of transaction management and data security and recovery are covered.
