New RTG “METEOR” approved by DFG

26 Jun 2025

DFG approved the new Research Training Group “Machine Learning and Control Theory: Exploring Synergies for Mutual Benefits (METEOR)“, a new cooperation between LMU Munich and TUM, set to begin in spring 2026.

We are excited to share that the joint RTG proposal, a collaborative work of LMU Munich and Technical University of Munich (TUM), was approved by the German Research Foundation (DFG)! The Research Training Group “Machine Learning and Control Theory: Exploring Synergies for Mutual Benefits (METEOR)“ is set to begin in spring 2026, as part of DFG’s nationwide effort to strengthen early scientific careers through the creation of 18 new RTGs, with a total funding volume of approximately 130 million euros.

The unique, interdisciplinary training program of the new RTG METEOR is tailored to bridge the gap between Control Theory and Machine Learning. The ambition of METEOR is to train a new generation of researchers at the intersection of Machine Learning and Control Theory for complex dynamical systems, advancing research through exploring synergies, complementarities, and mutual benefits of both fields.

To achieve METEOR’s vision and ambitions, the team of PIs (Principal Investigators) have been carefully put together to ensure a good balance between the RTG’s two main areas (ML and CT).

We extend our sincere thanks to all contributors involved:
